Bittou Residents Unite to Prevent Flooding in Sector 1

Bittou: The population of Sector 1 is actively addressing the flood risks in their community. Residents organized a community action on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, to reduce the risk of flooding on a road crossing a low-lying area. Armed with shovels and driven by a spirit of solidarity, young and old worked together to make the road passable before the arrival of heavy rains.

According to Burkina Information Agency, early in the morning, young people, adults, and the elderly, armed with shovels and digging tools, took over a section of the road that crosses a low-lying area in the neighborhood. This passage usually becomes impassable with the first rains, considerably complicating travel for local residents.

The initiative involves transporting and dumping a large quantity of earth to raise the lowest sections of the road, which are often submerged after rain. This preventative measure aims to improve safety and avoid the difficulties faced by local communities every year during the rainy season.

According to the initiator of the activity, Saidou Bagagnan, known as Naaba, this community mobilization responds to an urgent need of the local population. "You can see here that this is a low-lying area. During the rainy season, it becomes very difficult to cross to go to a neighbor's house or reach another part of the neighborhood," he explained.

He also emphasized that the situation poses a particular danger to children, who do not always understand the risks associated with rising water levels. "Children are not necessarily aware of the dangers. That is why we felt it was necessary for the population to mobilize to prevent potential risks," he added.

Mr. Bagagnan praised the strong participation of the residents and thanked the entire population of Sector 1 for their commitment and spirit of solidarity. This community activity took place the day after the first drops of rain fell on the night of March 10, 2026, in the town of Bittou. For the residents, this early rain served as a warning and strengthened the community's resolve to act quickly to avoid the recurring difficulties associated with flooding.

Through this initiative, the population of Sector 1 demonstrates that solidarity and collective action can effectively contribute to the prevention of natural risks and the improvement of the living conditions of the inhabitants.
