BioNTech Inaugurates mRNA Vaccine Production Site in Kigali

Kigali, Rwanda – BioNTech has announced the inauguration of a new messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine manufacturing site in Kigali, Rwanda. This development marks a milestone in the establishment of a sustainable and resilient African vaccine ecosystem and aims to support equitable access to new medicines globally.

According to Africa News Agency, The inauguration of the first production unit, called BioNTainer, signifies a step toward the realization of the first commercial-scale mRNA manufacturing plant on the African continent. BioNTech plans to complete the construction of all site buildings and start training specialist staff in 2024. Experimental mRNA production is scheduled to commence in 2025, positioning Rwanda at the forefront of advanced vaccine technology in Africa.
