BBY Opposition Group Initiates Motion of Censure Against Government in National Assembly

Dakar – The opposition parliamentary group Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) has announced its intent to file a motion of censure on Tuesday aimed at unseating the government of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, accusing it of incompetence.

According to the Burkina Information Agency, the decision to propose a motion of censure was disclosed during a Monday evening legislative session focused on a bill that, if passed, would have led to the abolition of two key governmental councils. Mbow criticized the Prime Minister for failing to deliver his general policy statement and respecting the constitutional institutions, emphasizing that the current administration’s conduct was unacceptable and could no longer be tolerated.

The session, which involved heated debates over constitutional amendments to dissolve the High Council of Local Authorities (HCCT) and the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), concluded with the National Assembly rejecting the bill with a narrow vote of 83 against 80 in favor. This move sets the stage for a significant showdown in the assembly as the BBY group, holding a majority, pushes forward with its censure motion against Sonko’s government.
