Baz¨ga: The Baz¨ga Provincial Directorate in charge of Preschool, Primary, and Non-Formal Education organized a day dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of national languages. This activity was part of the African Languages Week designated by UNESCO.
According to Burkina Information Agency, African Languages Week, established in 2020, is celebrated with the aim of highlighting African languages and their importance in culture and development. The 2026 edition of the event in Baz¨ga province featured activities involving the internal services of the Provincial Directorate of Preschool, Primary and Non-Formal Education (DPEPPNF) and schools within the basic education districts of Baz¨ga.
At the Baz¨ga Provincial Directorate of Education, Training and Training (DPEPPNF), under the leadership of provincial director Claude Ou©draogo, a presentation on national languages was given to the staff. This presentation was followed by a discussion, during which staff gathered in the courtyard shared stories, jokes, charades, riddles, and proverbs.
This session allowed DPEPPNF staff from ethnic groups such as Mossi, Gourounsi, Bissa, Fulani, Gourmantch©, Lobi, and Songhai to express themselves in their native languages, with translations provided to ensure understanding. Claude Ou©draogo remarked on the success of the day, highlighting the honor each speaker felt in showcasing their language and culture.
Mr. Ou©draogo emphasized the necessity of valuing language, culture, customs, and traditions for successful development, stating, "language carries culture". African Languages Week is also being observed in schools across the province's basic education districts with various activities until Saturday, May 9, 2026.
