Batili: Reconciliation should focus on the victims and those with rights, and be based on the principles of transitional justice

New York, February 27, 2023 (LANA) – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdullah Batili, commended the efforts of the Presidential Council and the African Union to achieve national reconciliation in Libya.

In his briefing to the Security Council on Monday evening, he made it clear that reconciliation is a long-term process that should be comprehensive and focus on victims and rights holders, and be based on the principles of transitional justice.

The UN official urged the Presidency Council, with the support of the African Union, to implement the necessary steps to convene a comprehensive conference for national reconciliation on Libya, reaffirming the United Nations’ support for the Libyan partners and the African Union.

Batili expressed his satisfaction with participating in the closing session of the preparatory meeting for the National Reconciliation Conference on December 12, with the participation of more than 150 participants, including prominent political, religious and tribal figures, in addition to representatives of the entire Libyan political spectrum.

It is noteworthy that this conference is to be held under the supervision of the African Union and the Presidential Council later this year.
