Basetsana looking to convert chances against Burundi in second leg of U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers

The South African U20 Women’s National Team will be looking to convert their chances when they take on Burundi in the second leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday (11 October 2023) at Lucas Moripe Stadum.

The two sides played to a goalless draw in their first meeting in the first leg over the weekend in a match that South Africa should have won easily. Basetsana created many chances and dominated the match, but could not get the ball into the back of the net in a World Cup qualifier also played at Lucus Moripe Stadium.

South African U20 Women’s team Coach Maude Khumalo has gone back to the drawing board and urged her charges to make use of their opportunities in the second leg.

‘We had great combination play in the first leg and of course, many missed opportunities, but if you do not score the goals, none of this matters. The girls were rushing in the final third, they were nervous and thus making mistakes in critical areas. There was also an element of not communicating properl
y, which we have addressed with the players,’ said Khumalo.

‘We understand that we have made the situation very difficult for ourselves, but I believe if we can score an early goal on Wednesday, the girls will settle and be able to play according to the plan that we have being working on.

‘We have managed to look at our set-pieces and have addressed the many issues that were concerning in the first match. We are positive that we will come away with the win and progress to the next round of qualifiers.’

Basetsana will host Burundi at 15h00 on Wednesday (11 October 2023) at Lucus Moripe. Entry is free to those in and around Atteridgeville. The match will also be live on SABC 1.
