Baringo: Baringo woman Representative, Florence Jematia, has challenged the youth from the county to refrain from alcohol and drug abuse for a better future. Jematia made the call during the groundbreaking ceremony of the 10,000 seater Kabarnet Stadium at the ASK Baringo branch showground, where she lamented over alarming levels of alcoholism and drug abuse in the county.
According to Kenya News Agency, Jematia expressed concern that the crisis has even led to some of the youth missing out on the recent countrywide National Police Service (NPS) recruitment, which saw quite a number of them being disqualified after reporting to training school. The legislator advised the youth to change their ways to become respectable and productive members of society, urging them to seek help if they face challenges instead of turning to drugs.
Jematia also highlighted the increase in teenage pregnancies, especially in remote parts of the county, attributing this rise to risky behaviors such as alcoholism and drug abuse. She called on all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the issue.
Her sentiments were echoed by Baringo Central Member of Parliament, Joshua Kandie, who praised the local security apparatus for their efforts in combating drug abuse. Kandie commended the county security team for seizing over 300 cartons of second-generation alcohol during a recent crackdown in Kabarnet town. He urged that the sellers be charged in court and the products be destroyed to restore order in the county.
County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa emphasized the importance of providing alternatives for the youth after they quit alcoholism and drug abuse. He pointed out that engaging the youth in sports activities is crucial in reducing idleness, which often leads to criminal lifestyles.
