Bahati ADC School Classrooms On Verge Of Collapse

Hamisi: Students occupying a single-storey building at Bahati ADC Comprehensive School in Hamisi Sub County, Vihiga County, faced evacuation on Monday, January 26, 2026, as the structure showed signs of collapse, with visible cracks appearing.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kenneth Ndalo, a parent at the school, explained that the building was originally a project by the Japanese to provide additional classes for Junior Secondary students under the new curriculum. However, the addition of another floor to an existing structure, which likely had a weak foundation, compromised the building's stability.

Ndalo further highlighted the issue of inadequate classrooms resulting from the evacuation, as the four affected classrooms have now been condemned. Ainea Avunama, a school committee member, shared that during a meeting held in the building, attendees noticed it was shaky, raising concerns about its safety.

Avunama also mentioned that students expressed a desire to transfer to a nearby school with safer buildings. He noted complaints from students about windows cracking when they jumped inside the classrooms and the building nearly caving in near grade 7 classes. Avunama expressed concern over the lack of action from education stakeholders and criticized the masons for their subpar construction work.
