Pretoria: Despite facing a series of injuries and player withdrawals, Bafana Bafana, South Africa’s senior national football team, remains focused on its upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team is set to play against Benin and Rwanda, maintaining their preparation momentum amidst these challenges.

According to South African Football Association (Johannesburg), the team had to adapt to unexpected changes in their lineup. Original squad members Lyle Foster, Njabulo Blom, Grant Kekana, and Thapelo Maseko were initially part of coach Hugo Broos’ strategy for the critical matches against Benin and Rwanda. However, due to health concerns, adjustments were necessary. Lebo Mothiba was withdrawn following a medical report from his team, leading to the urgent call-up of Evidence Makgopa as his replacement.

The team’s medical evaluations continued as both Kekana and Maseko joined the camp in Pretoria. Kekana’s scan upon arrival revealed risks that precluded his participation, necessitating his focus on recovery rather than the upcoming matches. Similarly, Maseko was released from the camp after scans advised rest for his full recovery.

To fill these gaps, Thapelo Xoki and Elias Mokwana have been brought into the team. Dr. Molobi noted that while major injury concerns have been managed, the medical team is still addressing minor issues, striving to maintain the squad’s health for the important games ahead.

Bafana Bafana is scheduled to host Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 18 November 2023, followed by an away game against Rwanda on Tuesday, 21 November 2023, as part of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. With these high-stakes matches approaching, the team is focused on keeping its lineup stable and players in optimal condition.
