Nakuru: In a move to enhance agricultural diversification and bolster farmers’ incomes, Nakuru County has successfully distributed thousands of avocado seedlings in Subukia and Waseges wards.
According to Kenya News Agency, a total of 11,429 avocado seedlings were distributed to farmers in Subukia Ward, while 4,286 seedlings were allocated to those in Waseges Ward. The distribution exercise was led by Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura, alongside Subukia Ward MCA Hon. Isabella Makori, Waseges Ward MCA Hon. Elijah Murage, and Subukia Sub County Officers.
Beyond the distribution of seedlings, farmers received crucial training on optimal planting techniques, pest and disease management, and the overall requirements for successful avocado cultivation. This comprehensive approach underscores the county’s commitment to ensuring maximum productivity and sustainable farming practices.
A key focus of the initiative was to sensitize farmers on the importance of crop diversification. This strategy aims to increase income streams and strengthen food and nutrition security within the region.
Beneficiary farmers expressed profound gratitude for the support, highlighting the potential of avocado farming to transform their livelihoods. The Hass variety, known for its shorter maturity period and extended fruiting season, was particularly welcomed. Farmers anticipate increased yields and higher profits, as avocado farming requires relatively less time and manpower.
‘This initiative represents a significant step towards empowering our farmers and strengthening our local economy,’ stated Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura. ‘By providing quality seedlings and comprehensive training, we are equipping our farmers with the tools they need to succeed.’
The distribution of these avocado seedlings reflects the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and economic growth within Nakuru County.
