AU Member States and Experts to Gather in Lomé for Financial Reform Conference

Lomé: The African Union Commission (AUC) is set to convene a three-day African Union Conference on Debt in Lomé, Togo, under the theme ‘Africa’s Public Debt Management Agenda: Restoring and Safeguarding Debt Sustainability.’

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the conference is being organized by the AUC’s Department for Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Minerals (ETTIM) and will be held from 12th to 14th May 2025. It aims to bring together AU Member States, policymakers, financial experts, and key stakeholders, including representatives from Ministries of Finance, African Central Banks, Regional Economic Communities, African Multilateral Financial Institutions, and Civil Society Organizations.

One of the primary objectives of the conference is to formulate a position on the necessary reforms to the current global financial architecture to address the ongoing debt crisis affecting the continent. The conference will also discuss innovative debt financing mechanisms to secure new financing w
hile ensuring debt sustainability. Additionally, it will explore and recommend sound debt management practices essential for restoring and safeguarding public debt sustainability in Africa.
