Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The African Union (AU) Executive Council convened its 22nd Extraordinary Session in Addis Ababa, focusing on the crucial upcoming election for the Union’s senior leadership, slated for February 2025. The meeting emphasized the significance of this election, as it will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of the AU and its member states.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the session reviewed a comprehensive report by the Permanent Representative Committee of the AU on the preparations for the forthcoming election. Key speakers, including Mohamed Salem Ould, the Foreign Minister of Mauritania and Chairperson of the Executive Council, and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie, highlighted the election’s importance in maintaining the Union’s integrity, adherence to guiding principles and rules, and ensuring the smooth operation of the institution. They also stressed the importance of unity among African countries to preserve the continent’s cohesion and strengthen the Commission.
