Attempts to Destabilize Niger: President Tiani Reveals Several Plots Hatched Against the Country

Niamey: The President of the Republic, Head of State, Army General Abdourahamane Tiani revealed, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in an exclusive interview with Radio and Television of Niger (RTN), several plots hatched against Niger from neighboring countries with the aim of destabilizing the country. During this intervention, he discussed in detail the destabilization projects targeting Niger.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the President cited several hostile initiatives from neighboring countries, including Nigeria and Benin. He provided detailed explanations, accompanied by evidence and dates, regarding these destabilization attempts. The Head of State suggested that these actions are linked to the presence of Western interests ousted by the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) since they took power on July 26, 2023. These powers are said to have found refuge in the border countries mentioned.

General Tiani revealed that meetings were held in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin, bringing together representatives of Western countries and their African allies. These meetings are said to aim to contribute to the destabilization of Niger. He also stated that the Nigerien authorities had precise intelligence on the movements of those who wished to sow chaos in the country. These individuals were allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons and explosives intended for terrorist groups operating in Niger.

During the interview, several names of people presumed to be complicit in these destabilization projects were cited by the president. The issue of the withdrawal of certain NGOs, notably the Red Cross, was also addressed. The president accused certain humanitarian organizations of being complicit, according to him, in the ongoing destabilization maneuvers.

Calling for continental solidarity, the Head of State urged African countries to “wake up” and end collaboration with foreign powers which, according to him, are working against the sovereignty of the continent. He insisted that the fight waged by Niger goes beyond its borders and concerns the whole of Africa.

The President also gave a brief historical overview of colonization and the various wars that have marked world history, before speaking about the current geopolitical and geostrategic situation in Niger. Finally, he accused certain Western powers, particularly France, of being behind the terrorist violence in the country, with the aim of imposing a new model of governance contrary to the aspirations of the Nigerien people.

The Nigerien head of state finally reassured that “many actions have already been undertaken to thwart these attempts at destabilization.”
