Ateker FC Triumphs in Busia Governor’s Cup with Sh1 Million Prize

Busia: Ateker Football Club (FC) from Teso Central Sub-County emerged victorious in the second edition of the Busia Governor's Cup on Saturday, securing Sh1 million and the prestigious trophy. Ateker clinched the title after defeating Okimaru FC of Teso North 4-1 in a penalty shootout, following a scoreless draw during regular play at the Malaba Township Comprehensive School grounds.

According to Kenya News Agency, the champions also received an additional Sh70,000 from the Sh1.5 million contributed by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) interim party leader Dr. Oburu Odinga, which aimed to enhance the tournament's prize pool. This generous donation allowed teams reaching the quarterfinals to earn Sh70,000 each. Okimaru FC, the runners-up, claimed Sh570,000 for their commendable performance.

Ateker secured their spot in the final by narrowly beating Jobless FC from Matayos Sub-County 1-0 in the semifinals. In a parallel semifinal match, Okimaru FC triumphed over Marenga FC of Bunyala 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Defending champions Ajax FC were eliminated in the early stages, paving the way for new champions.

In the women's division, Mungatsi FC from Nambale won the title by defeating defending champions Hakati Queens of Samia Sub-County 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw. Mungatsi received Sh570,000, while Hakati Queens took home Sh270,000.

The award ceremony saw the presence of several leaders, including Dr. Oburu Odinga. Busia Governor Paul Otuoma congratulated all teams for their spirited efforts and talent display. He also instructed the County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Olunga Ekwenye, to ensure Busia can produce a team capable of competing in Kenya's top-flight football league.
