Siaya County Implements Stipends for Community Health Promoters

SIAYA, Kenya – Siaya County has distinguished itself as the first among Kenya’s 47 counties to provide monetary recognition to Community Health Promoters (CHPs), enhancing the role of these crucial health care providers in their communities.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative is part of the county’s comprehensive plan to revitalize its healthcare system. The governor spoke at an event attended by Mama Ida Odinga, where he highlighted the county’s dedication to improving healthcare access and outcomes for its residents. By offering stipends of up to Sh.3,000, Siaya County acknowledges the fundamental role CHPs play in delivering primary healthcare services.

The governor detailed several strategic commitments underpinning the transformation of healthcare in Siaya. Among these are the strengthening of community health services and primary healthcare, in accordance with his ‘Nyalore’ (it is possible) manifesto, and the addressing of healthcare staff shortages by hiring 180 health workers. This investment aims to ensure the provision of medical services is both efficient and effective.

Orengo also mentioned the county’s collaboration with the national government to equip CHPs with the necessary tools and supplies to effectively tackle the region’s specific disease patterns and demographic challenges. This partnership underscores the importance of community health workers in the front lines of disease prevention and care.

Significant health improvements were shared by the governor, including a reduction of the malaria burden from 33 percent to 19 percent. Additionally, there has been a substantial increase in skilled birth deliveries, with a rise from 56 percent to 96 percent, which has notably decreased maternal and child mortality rates in the county.

Furthermore, Siaya County has achieved a remarkable 99 percent immunization coverage rate, a significant increase from the previous 67 percent. This figure reflects the county’s dedication to safeguarding children’s health through preventive measures like vaccination.
