Asumbi Girls Basketball Team Eyes National Victory

Mombasa: Asumbi Girls School basketball team has expressed confidence in winning this year's Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national ball games. The team secured their spot by defeating Ng'iya Girls 47-40 in the Nyanza regional finals held at St Joseph's Rapogi Boys.

According to Kenya News Agency, this year's KSSSA national ball games are scheduled to take place from April 7, 2025, at Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa County. Asumbi Girls basketball team captain Ryan Bahati expressed optimism about becoming champions this year, attributing their confidence to the intense training they have been undertaking. This marks the first time the team will represent the Nyanza region in the basketball games at the national level.

'We are confident that we will emerge the winners at the national games. We are training hard to achieve our dream of representing Kenya in the East African ball games championships,' Bahati said. The team is placed in pool B alongside Butere Girls, Kaya Girls, and MPESA Academy.

Player Aphline Judith credited their good preparation for their victory over Ng'iya Girls in the regional games and assured fans they are set to win this year's national trophy. 'Asumbi is not a pushover; we are going to win this year's national basketball games,' Judith stated.

The team coach, Ephraim Ochieng', mentioned that they have refined their strategy following their regional triumph. He noted the team's morale has been boosted and they are focusing on improving weak areas to overcome their rivals. 'I am confident that we are not going to disappoint our fans; we are prepared enough to face opponents,' Ochieng said. He has been training the girls for the last two years.

The school's Chief Principal, Linet Pino Sati, encouraged the girls to aim for the national trophy, emphasizing the school's full support for the team.
