NAIROBI: Ashleigh Moolman from South Africa has clinched her fifth title at the African Road Cycling Championships, dominating the women’s road race across Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. Moolman completed the 104-kilometre race in 3:7:50, outpacing competitors from across the continent.
According to Kenya News Agency, Moolman expressed her enthusiasm for the support she received during the race, highlighting the encouragement from spectators along the route as a motivating factor. She also mentioned her anticipation for the upcoming championships, scheduled to take place in Rwanda.
Eritrea’s Dawit Mengs finished second, followed by Rwanda’s Dianne Ingabire, who secured third place. Kenya’s top cyclist in the event, Monica Jelimo, finished in the 12th position. The event not only showcased elite African cycling talent but also served as a platform to promote cycling in the region.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the race’s role in promoting cycling among African youth and its potential to boost local economies. The live broadcast of the event reached viewers in 35 African countries, significantly raising the profile of the sport. Murkomen also discussed plans for developing incubation and training centers, particularly in North Rift and Iten, which is renowned globally as a training ground for world-class athletes.
