Burkina Faso Government Takes Action Against Health Risks Posed by Rising Temperatures


OUAGADOUGOU — In response to the recent spike in temperatures, the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health has launched initiatives aimed at mitigating the potential increase in morbidity and mortality linked to the heatwave.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the health department has been proactive in advising the public on precautionary measures and preparing for any health-related contingencies that may arise from the soaring temperatures.



A document released by the Health Ministry on its Facebook page outlined the urgent need for mobilization against the health impacts of the heatwave. Dr. Issa Ouédraogo, the Secretary-General of the Ministry, emphasized the importance of early action, accurate diagnosis, and swift management of health issues in health facilities across the country to lower health risks.



Dr. Ouédraogo highlighted the necessity of conducting a comprehensive assessment in the nation’s health centers to address the critical rise in temperatures effectively. The health sector has been instructed to rigorously collect and analyze data to improve case management during this period of extreme heat.



Discussions among health officials have also covered the current conditions for patient reception, the working environment of nursing staff, and strategies for managing cases amid the high temperatures. In the interim, the Health Ministry has advised the population to adopt preventive measures, such as regular hydration and special care for the elderly, including seeking medical attention at the nearest health center upon noticing any symptoms.



Furthermore, a visit to the medical emergency services of the Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital Center (CHU-YO) was conducted, providing insights into the working conditions of healthcare workers and the status of patients being treated during this challenging period.
