Oshakati — Ambrosius Kumbwa, President of the All People's Party (APP), unveiled his party's commitment to overhaul the educational system during the official launch of their manifesto at Dr Romanus Kampungu Secondary School Sports Stadium on Saturday. The APP's proposed educational reforms include reintroducing specialized Colleges of Education to address the nation's teacher shortage and infrastructural deficits.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Kumbwa criticized the current state of education in Namibia, which he claimed has been inadequate for 34 years. He highlighted the inadequate facilities, with many learners still receiving lessons under trees or in temporary structures, and reported non-compliance with the teacher-learner ratio policy along with issues of misconduct among students and teachers. Kumbwa pledged that, if elected, the APP would ensure the elimination of schools operating under such conditions within three years and would abolish the platoon system within two years to secure a proper classroom environment for every student.
Further reform plans include the integration of peace studies into the national curriculum to foster justice, unity, and peaceful coexistence, which could, as per the Global Peace Index, reduce school violence by up to 40%. The APP also aims to establish specialized colleges tailored to regional needs, such as agriculture-focused education in the northeastern and Kunene regions, thereby enhancing skills relevant to local economic activities.
Additionally, the manifesto addresses the logistical challenges faced by rural learners, approximately 10% of whom walk more than five kilometers to school. Kumbwa committed to providing reliable transportation for learners in remote areas, ensuring easier access to education.
