Anti-Poaching Guards Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Suspected Poacher

Okahandja: Two anti-poaching security guards, aged 23 and 34, were arrested Tuesday morning for allegedly shooting and killing a suspected poacher on a private commercial farm near Okahandja. Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, the Namibian Police Force's Head of Community Affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, confirmed the incident in an interview on Wednesday. She noted that the deceased has not yet been identified.

According to Namibia Press Agency - English, the shooting occurred around 08h00 on Tuesday at Farm Otjisazu. The guards reportedly encountered two suspects involved in the hunting and killing of an oryx. During a pursuit, one suspect was fatally shot with a shotgun, while the other managed to escape the scene.

'The unknown deceased sustained injuries to his chest, right abdominal, and lower abdomen area and died on the spot,' Mbeha stated. Police have since recovered the licensed shotgun used in the shooting. The two suspects, who both face charges of murder, are expected to make their first appearance in the Okahandja Magistrate's Court this week.
