From the very first moment that the security situation in Sudan deteriorated due to the armed clashes there, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately issued an announcement urging Greeks in Sudan to observe the highest possible security measures and to avoid unnecessary travel.

At the same time, upon instructions from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, our Embassy in Cairo, which has concurrent accreditation to Sudan, is in constant contact with Metropolitan Savvas of Nubia.  In addition, the Ambassador of Greece in Cairo has contacted the Head of the EU Delegation in Sudan (Khartoum) and it was agreed that the EU Delegation will assist in the security of the Greeks in Sudan. The Ambassador of Greece in Cairo is also in contact with the President of the Greek Community in Khartoum.

Upon instruction from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was immediately activated and is in contact and coordination with the other EU Member States through the Consular Cooperation system. The Crisis Management Unit is also in contact with Metropolitan Savvas.

The main concern at the moment remains the safety of the Greeks in Sudan. It is necessary to comply with what is mentioned in yesterday’s relevant instructions given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two wounded Greeks are in a hospital and so far, there is no information about other injured Greeks. For any new developments there will be an update.
