Luanda: The Youth and Sports Minister, Rui Falco, expressed satisfaction with the organization of the African Senior Men's Basketball Championship 'Afrobasket2025', which took place in the provinces of Luanda and Namibe from August 12 to 24. The event received commendable feedback from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister highlighted during his fourth meeting with the press since his appointment in 2024 that FIBA's report on the event was favorable, showcasing the efforts and achievements of Angola in hosting the championship. The minister revealed that 4 billion kwanzas were invested in Afrobasket, which marked Angola's regaining of the title after 12 years. The report emphasized the substantial economic and image impact generated by the event, amounting to over 51 billion kwanzas and 18 billion kwanzas, respectively. The 31st edition of the African Basketball Championship witnessed a social impact with 240,000 spectators, as reported by FIBA. Angola achieved the highest possible score of 5,000 points in terms of image and notoriety, surpassing countries with more developed sports and economic sectors. In terms of media coverage, brand associations, online mentions, social networks, and public perception, Angola achieved a score of 5 in the local content chapter. This achievement was primarily due to the entire organization being managed solely by Angolans, underscoring the country's capability in hosting international competitions. Minister Falco, addressing questions related to various aspects such as school and community sports, infrastructure management, professional sports, and sponsorship, emphasized the benefits derived from hosting international events. He expressed the desire to quantify the gains from the upcoming Angola-Argentina game on November 14th, as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of national independence. Reflecting on the success of hosting international events in 2025, the minister revealed that Angola had received invitations from international federations to host world championships. However, he urged careful consideration of the nation's economic situation before accepting such offers. The minister also shared data indicating that the last African MMA Championship, hosted in Luanda, garnered 9.9 million views, surpassing the 2 million views of the last MMA World Championship held in Europe. As a result, Angola was invited to host the world championship in 2026, competing with Brazil and the United States of America for the honor. Additionally, during the African Nautical Sports Championship, the president of the African Confederation of the sport extended an invitation to Angola to host the World Championship in 2026, highlighting Luanda Bay's suitability for world competitions.
