Icolo e bengo: The Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Jos© de Lima Massano, highlighted the launch of operations at the Opaia Motors car factory as a crucial and sustainable advancement in Angola's automotive sector. The announcement came during the inauguration of the factory unit situated in the Special Economic Zone (ZEE), which has the capacity to produce 1,000 buses and 22,000 light vehicles annually.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister emphasized that the project aligns with national policies targeting economic development, industrialization, and greater integration of the economy. He noted that Opaia Motors stands out in the automotive industry due to its solid structure, which is built on technological partnerships and the development of local technical expertise.
The minister pointed out the potential for progressively integrating locally manufactured components, such as seats, floors, and certain safety systems. This integration aims to enhance the project's sustainability and strengthen its impact on the national value chain over the medium and long term.
He also affirmed the government's commitment to supporting domestic producers, primarily through public procurement. Jos© de Lima Massano mentioned that the General State Budget for 2026 will include customs tariff adjustments to protect the national automotive industry and encourage the consumption of locally produced vehicles.
The factory's initial production capacity is expected to satisfy the domestic market's demands, with plans to renew the vehicle fleet and explore export opportunities. Currently, the factory employs 500 workers, but staffing is projected to increase to 3,500 at peak production, with significant emphasis on youth training.
