Luanda: The Angolan government has unveiled plans for a major industrial project aimed at building a national steel mill. This strategic development is set to add significant value to iron ore resources extracted from the Cassinga mines in Huila Province as well as other regions rich in iron ore reserves.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Joo Louren§o made this announcement on Friday during the inauguration of the Mo§Smedes Bay Integrated Development Project. This comprehensive project encompasses the expansion and modernization of the Sacomar Commercial and Mineral Port, along with the construction of a new container terminal in Namibe province.
In his address, President Louren§o emphasized the government’s commitment to establishing a steel mill that would enhance the value of extracted iron ore. “Namibe has just gained a new, modern container terminal and a Sacomar mineral terminal. We intend to receive minerals not only from the interior of the country-the provinces of Huila, Cubango, and Cuando-but also from Namibe itself,” he stated.
The president further revealed plans for the renovation of the Namibe Bay waterfront as part of the project’s broader infrastructure development. He expressed optimism about the future, noting, “Within a few years, therefore, we will have a completely new, modern city of Mo§Smedes, with infrastructure that will contribute to the economic development of the province and the country.”
Moreover, President Louren§o highlighted the strategic integration of the Mo§Smedes railway with the port infrastructure. This integration aims to improve connectivity with other transportation systems, particularly road and rail, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the country’s logistics network.
