Luanda: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD) has granted approval for the Union of African Karate-Do Federations (UFAK) to organize the 2026 edition of the African Championship in Angola. The continental sports organization had initially proposed that Angola host only the Zonal Championship. However, following a recent analysis of the infrastructures, it was concluded that the conditions are suitable to host both the Zonal and the African Championships.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the information was communicated to the press during an international tournament marking the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, which concluded on Sunday at the Cidadela pavilion in Luanda. The decision followed a meeting between the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falco, the vice-president of the International Confederation, Bechir Cherif, and the president of the Union of African Federations, Souleimane Gaye.
Minister Rui Falco emphasized the importance of commencing organizational work promptly to fulfill the commitment to host both events in 2026. He highlighted Angola’s quality infrastructures, which have been further enhanced by recent improvements for the African Senior Men’s Basketball Championship held in August.
The minister reiterated the ministry’s support for initiatives aimed at organizing international competitions in Angola, with the objective of promoting sports throughout the country. Souleimane Gaye, president of the Union of African Federations, expressed that hosting both competitions signifies Angola’s dedication to the advancement of Karate-Do and sports in general.
Giliano Andr©, president of the Angolan Federation, noted that hosting the two African events will benefit the athletes by providing them with opportunities to participate in international competitions.
