Luanda: Angolan president Joo Lourenço issued a statement on Tuesday expressing his deepest condolences to King Felipe VI of Spain, following the tragedy that plunged the Spanish nation into mourning when two high-speed trains collided on Sunday, killing 40 people and injuring several others. According to Angola Press News Agency, the statement released by the Presidency of the Republic on social media detailed that the Angolan Head of State sent a message to the Spanish Sovereign, extending condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. The accident occurred on Sunday night in the municipality of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, involving two high-speed trains. One train was from the private company Iryo, which had departed from Málaga and was destined for Madrid, while the other train was from the public company Renfe, traveling in the opposite direction from Madrid to Huelva. The incident happened when the last three carriages of the Iryo train derailed and invaded another track where the Ren fe train was running. This occurred at a location known as the Adamuz halt, which features a line maintenance substation and a switch point. As a consequence of the derailment, the first two carriages of the Renfe train were thrown forward, falling into an embankment approximately four meters deep. In response to the accident, the Spanish government declared three days of national mourning.
