Windhoek: Angolan head of state, Joo Louren§o, will attend the state funeral in Windhoek on Saturday for Namibia's first president, Sam Nujoma, who died on February 8 at the age of 95.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the president's press secretary, Luis Fernando, stated that Joo Louren§o will leave Luanda on Friday. The former Namibian president, often referred to as the father of Namibia, will be honored with tributes, continuing a tradition that has been ongoing for the past three weeks.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, and will mark the conclusion of an extensive mourning period that featured visits to all regions of Namibia. President Sam Nujoma, former leader of the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) and a pivotal figure in Namibia's independence, will be interred at the Heroes' Memorial, a site where other notable figures, including President Hage Geingob who passed away last year, have been laid to rest.
The program for the funeral procession begins on Friday from Parliament Gardens and will travel through several notable streets including Robert Mugabe Avenue, Sam Nujoma Drive, and Hosea Kutako Drive, among others. On Saturday, the procession will start from the Independence Stadium and make its way to the Heroes Acre Memorial for the burial, scheduled to commence at 09:15 local time. The Heroes Acre Memorial will open its gates early to allow the public to pay their final respects to Sam Nujoma.
