Rio de Janeiro: The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, has arrived at the Museum of Modern Art, the venue for the ongoing G20 Summit. President Lourenço, who was welcomed by host president Lula da Silva, is scheduled to speak on Monday afternoon, Brazilian time, on the panel titled ‘The Global Alliance to Fight Hunger and Poverty.’ This opportunity comes after Angola’s recent status as a founding member of the alliance.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Lourenço’s participation will extend into the second day of the summit on Tuesday, where he will discuss the topic of Energy Transition. Furthermore, he is expected to take part in the Leaders’ Declaration. Accompanying him are key figures including Téte António and the Minister of State for Economic Affairs, José de Lima Massano, who have been in the city since Friday, along with other executive officials.
The G20 Summit has drawn several global leaders, including Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Xi Jinping of China, Joe Biden of the USA,
Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, among others. The G20, established in 1999, consists of the eight most affluent and influential countries, known as the G8, along with 11 emerging nations and the European Union. Recently, the African Union was granted permanent status at the last summit in India in September 2023.
The 18th G20 Summit, which took place in New Delhi on 9 and 10 September 2023, was held under the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’ The G20 Summits have been pivotal in addressing global financial reforms and have been hosted in various cities worldwide since the inaugural summit in Washington in 2008. As the current summit progresses, Brazil will cede its leadership role of the G20 to South Africa.
