Angolan President João Lourenço Arrives in Rio de Janeiro for G20 Summit.

Rio de Janeiro: The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to participate in the 19th G20 Summit, scheduled to take place from November 18th to 19th.

According to Angola Press News Agency, João Lourenço is accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, and a delegation including the Minister of State for the Economic Area, José de Lima Massano, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The summit will convene 55 delegations from 40 countries and 15 international organizations at the Museum of Modern Art.

On Sunday afternoon, João Lourenço is set to meet with Brazilian President Lula da Silva to discuss cooperative efforts and advance bilateral relations. As a guest observer at the G20 Summit, Lourenço will address topics such as ‘The Global Alliance to Combat Hunger and Poverty’, in which Angola is a founding member, as well as ‘Energy Transition’. He will also participate in the Leaders’ Declaration, a collective statement developed throughout Brazil’s presidency.

The G20,
established in 1999, includes the G8 countries-Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Russia-alongside 11 emerging nations such as South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and China, among others. The European Union and the African Union, which gained permanent status at the previous summit in India, also participate, highlighting Africa’s role in global decision-making.

Throughout Brazil’s G20 presidency, over 130 preparatory meetings occurred in various Brazilian cities. Angola took part as an observer in sessions involving Foreign Ministers, Finance and Central Bank Governors, and Climate discussions. Carolina Cerqueira, President of the National Assembly, attended the 10th Summit of the Presidents of the G20 Parliaments, while another Angolan delegation joined the inaugural Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the P20.
