Angolan President Embarks on Strategic State Visit to Algeria

Luanda: Angolan President Joo Lourenço traveled to Algeria on Monday for a 3-day state visit, at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as part of strengthening bilateral cooperation. At the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, the Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço, received farewell greetings from the Angolan Vice-President, Esperança da Costa. According to Angola Press News Agency, the visit's program includes official talks between the Angolan and Algerian delegations, as well as a private meeting between the two Heads of State in the city of Algiers. The talks are expected to result in the signing of several legal instruments of cooperation in strategic sectors for Angola and Algeria, with emphasis on energy, mineral resources, agriculture, technical and vocational training, and transport. During his stay in Algerian territory, Joo Lourenço will also address members of both chambers of the Algerian Parliament, in an act that is par t of the dynamic of strengthening institutional relations between Luanda and Algiers. The Angolan President's agenda also includes a visit to a seawater desalination plant, an experience considered relevant for Angola given the challenges related to water supply in various regions of the country. Angola and Algeria have maintained diplomatic relations since 1976 and have strengthened, in recent years, mechanisms for political coordination and bilateral cooperation, especially in the sectors of energy, oil and gas, defense, education and mineral resources. The two countries also share common positions in international organizations, such as the African Union, the United Nations and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, on matters related to peace, security and development of the African continent.
