Luanda: A delegation from the US Congress met on Monday with the Speaker of the Angolan Parliament, Carolina Cerqueira, and members of different political representations holding parliamentary seats. The meeting aimed to enhance interparliamentary cooperation and strengthen the Angola-United States of America National Friendship Group.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the American delegation visited Angola as part of President Joe Biden’s tour. During the discussions, the U.S. Congress members praised Angola’s progress and recommended the enactment of specific laws related to local government enforcement, national security, and the criminalization of vandalism. These legislative steps are viewed as crucial for advancing Angola’s national democratic process.
In response, Angolan Members of Parliament assured the U.S. delegation that these concerns are being addressed by the National Assembly and are slated for approval soon.
The Speaker of the National Assembly reiterated Angola’s commitment to promot
ing and preserving world peace. She also highlighted that the Angolan Parliament is composed of 39% female members and predominantly young representatives, with an average age of 50. The Parliament actively participates in several regional and international organizations, including the SADC Parliamentary Forum, the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum, the IPU, and the Parliaments of the Francophonie, among others.
