Addis ababa: Angolan Head of State and pro tempore president of the African Union (AU), Joo Lourenço, is actively participating in the High-Level Dialogue on Finance and Health related to Health Security and Sovereignty in Africa, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This event, organized by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the African Development Bank (ADB), marks Lourenço's first official engagement on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Summit of Heads of State and Government. According to Angola Press News Agency, President Joo Lourenço, who has been in Addis Ababa since Thursday, is also scheduled to participate in the 2nd Italy-Africa Summit on Friday. Additionally, he will attend a state dinner hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at the International Convention Center. The AU Summit, set to begin on Saturday, will see the presidency of the continental organization handed over to Burundi. The summit includes discussions on peace and security, rev iewing the African Union Peace and Security Council's report on activities conducted and the state of peace and security in Africa from January to December 2025. This report will be presented by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi with input from Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political, Peace, and Security Affairs at the AU Commission. Kenyan President William Ruto will present a draft memorandum of understanding involving the AU, Regional Economic Communities, and Regional Mechanisms on the African Standby Force's use. Additionally, the report on the organization's institutional reforms will be discussed. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will provide insights into the outcomes of the G20 Summit held in Johannesburg in November 2025, as part of the AU's participation in the forum. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairman of the African Union Commission, will present a report on the organization's participation in the G20 forum. African leaders will also review various reports, including the annual repor t of the President of the Commission and the Committee of Heads of State and Government on the Africa CDC, presented by the outgoing chair, Joo Lourenço. Further agenda items include reports from the African Peer Review Mechanism, AUDA-NEPAD Steering Committee, the Committee of Ten on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council, and the Committee on Climate Change. The summit's overarching theme is "Ensuring sustainable availability of water and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063," which is expected to be a focus of the next term. The African Union, founded in 2002 as a successor to the Organization of African Unity, aims to promote integration, peace, security, democracy, and economic development among its 55 member states. Based in Addis Ababa, the AU is committed to transforming the continent through Agenda 2063, emphasizing the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
