Huila: The Angolan government will implement integrated measures to combat illegal mining in Huila province. It will reorganize concessions, conduct technical assessments of affected areas, and define structural solutions on the ground. The information was disclosed Tuesday by the Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, Janio Correia Victor, at the end of a working meeting with the local government, which served to assess the situation of illegal mineral exploitation in the region. According to Angola Press News Agency, the meeting constituted a first approach to institutional coordination and will allow the collection of preliminary information on the most affected areas by illegal activity. The official added that technical teams from the Ministry will go to the municipalities with the highest incidence of illegal mining (Dongo, Jamba Mineira, Cuvango, Chipindo, and Caluquembe) to carry out a detailed diagnosis of the exploration areas and existing concessions. "We will go to the field to understand the reality and, from there, make concrete decisions. Afterwards, we will conduct a joint assessment with the State Government," he said. Janio Victor said illegal mining is taking place in several provinces of the country, requiring a broader and more coordinated approach at the national level, adding that the practice is frequently associated with areas that are difficult to control and vulnerable, where the population resorts to rudimentary means to ensure their livelihood. The Secretary of State explained that previous operations involving defense and security forces dismantled several illegal mining networks; however, he said, the practice persists. Janio Correia Victor said concrete proposals will be presented, in coordination with the local government for the definitive control of illegal mining and the reorganization of the mining sector in Huila.
