Luanda: The Angolan government on Thursday paid tribute to Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos "Nando," who passed away due to illness, acknowledging his role as a nationalist and a statesman.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the government issued a public statement highlighting Fernando dos Santos's significant contributions to the nation. His distinguished career included serving as Minister of the Interior, Prime Minister, Vice President of the Republic, and Speaker of the National Assembly, among other notable positions. In light of his passing, the government extended its deepest condolences to his family.
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was born on March 5, 1950, and joined the MPLA in 1971. Following Angola's independence in 1975, he embarked on a career with the People's Police Corps and rose to become head of the division by 1978. From 1982 to 1985, he led the National Police and later assumed roles as Deputy Minister of the Interior and head of the Information Services (SINFO), where he was responsible for crucial security and intelligence matters.
In December 2002, he was appointed Prime Minister, a role he maintained until 2008 under the existing Constitution. The 2010 constitutional changes, which eliminated the position of prime minister, led to his appointment as the first vice president of Angola, a position he held until 2012.
His tenure as Speaker of the National Assembly spanned from 2008 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2022, where he solidified his influence in political and legislative matters. Fernando da Piedade passed away at the Girassol Clinic in Luanda, where he was urgently evacuated. He had earned a law degree from Agostinho Neto University in 2009, adding legal expertise to his extensive political experience.
Fernando da Piedade's legacy is marked by his contributions to state development and the strengthening of Angola's institutions. In recognition of his service, President Joao Louren§o honored him with the Independence Class Medal during the 50th anniversary of National Independence on November 11.
