Angolan Football Federation Admits Shortcomings in Afcon 2025

Luanda: Alves Simµes, the chairman of the Angolan Football Federation (FAF), admitted on Tuesday in Luanda that the national team's participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was a failure considering the set objectives. Simµes made the statement during a press conference to evaluate the national team's performance in the tournament, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Simµes stated, "We completely failed in our objectives. We have to admit it; that's the truth," acknowledging that poor preparation was the root of the team's poor performance. He emphasized that despite the challenges, the group did not face issues concerning bonuses for players or coaching staff, which allowed them to concentrate solely on the competition.

Angola was placed in Group B alongside South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Egypt. They suffered a loss against South Africa with a score of 1-2, drew with Zimbabwe 1-1, and had a goalless draw with Egypt. Finishing in third place with only two points, Angola did not advance in the competition, failing to meet their objective of surpassing their previous performance, where they reached the quarterfinals.
