Luanda: The Angolan minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, announced that Angola, during its presidency of the African Union in 2025, will actively support and monitor South Africa’s leadership in the G20 group. This statement was made following the conclusion of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Angola participated with a delegation led by President João Lourenço, at the invitation of the Brazilian government.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Téte António emphasized that as the Chair of the African Union, the Angolan President will represent the organization in the spirit of the AU’s common position, a practice that began at the Rio+20 meeting on sustainable development. This approach has been instrumental in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals. António stressed the importance of maintaining this style within the G20 to effectively represent the interests of African nations.
During the G20 Summit, Angola achieved its primary objective of communicating its perspectives
on key issues such as combating hunger and poverty, energy transition, and the reform of global governance institutions. The summit also strengthened the historical ties between Angola and Brazil, with both nations keen to deepen their bilateral relationship, particularly in agriculture. The Brazilian minister of Agriculture, along with business leaders, is expected to visit Angola as part of this growing cooperation.
António praised Brazil’s presidency of the G20, noting its inclusive nature and numerous sectoral meetings across 15 Brazilian cities. He highlighted significant initiatives, including the World Alliance against Hunger and discussions on energy transition and global governance reform. The summit also addressed food security, with debates on market openness versus state intervention to combat poverty and hunger.
The minister underscored the importance of reforming international institutions to prevent obsolescence, drawing parallels with the historical context of the League of Nations and the U
nited Nations. He also noted the focus on women’s empowerment and the smooth transition to South Africa’s upcoming G20 presidency, which will prioritize economic inclusivity and environmental issues, with an emphasis on AI.
South Africa aims to continue Brazil’s focus on food security while introducing new priorities such as artificial intelligence, presenting a significant challenge following Brazil’s dynamic leadership.
