Angolan Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins Presents Credentials to EU

Brussels: Angola's ambassador to the European Union, Edgar Gaspar Martins, presented on Thursday his Credentials to the Head of the European Council, António Costa, and to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. According to Angola Press News Agency, had access to the ceremony also included the accreditation of 13 other ambassadors, highlighting the dynamism of the EU's multilateral relations with partner states. The formal ceremony marks the official start of Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins's duties as Angola's representative to the European Union, reaffirming Angola's commitment to strengthening and deepening its relations with this institution. These relations are built on friendship, political dialogue, and multisectoral cooperation. During the occasion, the ambassador underscored the strategic importance of the Angola-European Union partnership, noting the EU's role as a key partner in sustainable development, economic diversification, and investment in vital sectors for Angola' s future. EU officials expressed their desire to continue working with Angola on projects that benefit both sides and promote sustainable practices in their partnership based on common interests. In a week marked by bilateral meetings between the Angolan Diplomatic Mission and European Union institutions, Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins participated in a technical meeting with EU External Services officials on Sept 8th. The meeting aimed to establish common ground for preparations for the 7th African Union-European Union Summit, scheduled for Nov 24th and 25th in Luanda. Before the meeting, the diplomat was received by the Director for Africa of the EU External Services, Patricia Llombart, who thanked the Angolan Government for its willingness to host the event. Patricia Llombart highlighted the positive dynamics of relations between Angola and the European Union, demonstrated by bilateral and ministerial meetings with positive outcomes. Despite the current international context marked by political tension s, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza and the Middle East, and instability in relations between China and the United States, the AU-EU Summit represents an opportunity to convey a joint message in defense of multilateralism. Ambassador Edgar Gaspar Martins acknowledged the EU's openness and willingness to participate as factors in strengthening relations, emphasizing the expectation that the summit will consider African challenges from a sustainable development perspective. The diplomat also highlighted priority areas of cooperation, such as the Lobito Corridor, which already has European investment of over £600 million, and the agricultural sector, where Angola seeks greater technological and human support, essential for food security and inclusive economic growth.
