Kigali: Angola's U-16 national basketball team was eliminated from the Afrobasket 2025 tournament after a 51-69 defeat against Egypt in the quarterfinals held in Rwanda. The Angolan squad faced a challenging game, trailing by five points at halftime with a score of 32-37, and were unable to close the gap, eventually losing by 18 points after 40 minutes of play. This outcome is a step back from their previous performance, where they secured a fourth-place finish in the 2023 tournament in Monastir, Tunisia.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the team had a mixed performance in the tournament. They started with a victory against Rwanda, winning 67-56, followed by a loss to C´te d'Ivoire with a score of 51-64, and then a win against Sierra Leone, finishing 65-37. The team featured players from various clubs, including Joseandro Andr©, Edvaldo Pessela, and Domingos Nhanga from 1º de Agosto, as well as Gerv¡sio Dias, Edilson Pedro, Siro de Carvalho, Alfredo Micaba, and Marcelo Chissuata from Petro de Luanda.
The roster was completed by Fernando Joo of Interclube, Vanilson Domingos from Vila Clotilde, Miguel Salabiaku representing Ferrovi¡rio, and Domingos Chaves of CD Kilamba. Despite their efforts, the team will need to regroup and strategize for future competitions to improve their standing in international tournaments.
