Luanda: The first remote prostate cancer surgery in Angola, conducted from Orlando, USA, is set to take place in the coming days, Health Minister Slvia Lutucuta announced Thursday. Telemedicine, or remote surgery, involves performing procedures from a distance using robotics and communication technologies to transmit images and commands in real-time between the surgeon and the patient.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister shared this groundbreaking initiative while speaking at the 2nd National Conference on the State of Sanitation in Angola (ANGOLASAN2). She emphasized that preparations are underway to ensure the success of the surgery. This operation will mark the first telesurgery of its kind in Africa, placing Angola at the forefront of medical innovation on the continent.
The minister highlighted that this achievement stems from the successful experimental robotic surgeries at the Hospital Complex in Luanda, where surgeons operated robots remotely. She noted that robotic surgery has significantly impacted cancer treatment and improved the quality of health services for patients.
Regarding ANGOLASAN2, Minister Lutucuta mentioned that the conference aims to enhance the prevention and control of cholera by focusing on strengthening basic sanitation across the nation.
