Angola to Cease Free Distribution of Seeds and Fertilizers from 2025-2026

Lubango: The Angolan government has announced its decision to halt the free distribution of fertilizers and seeds starting from the 2025-2026 agricultural season, as declared by Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Isaac dos Anjos, during a meeting in Lubango.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister emphasized the government's need to withdraw from competing with private companies capable of serving the market. This decision aims to establish a balance in the pricing of fertilizers and seeds. The government has sanctioned an agreement for the procurement of 180,000 tons of fertilizers from Morocco, with the private sector expected to import an additional 200,000 tons. The minister noted that continuing to offer free resources in a market where business dynamics need stabilization is counterproductive.

He highlighted that the forecast for growth and increased demand for fertilizers makes it appropriate for producers to purchase them. Regarding seeds, the minister indicated that the market comprises four companies and more than six resellers, and the government intends to abstain from interfering to ensure market functionality through regulation.

Minister dos Anjos called for public understanding, stating, "I hope to count on your support to convey to people that it is not my will to do so, but it is an obligation. We are no longer going to give offers; what is available people will have to pay. We will then discuss the forms of payment." He also observed that the grain storage facilities are adequately stocked with massango, massambala, and corn, which is a positive development.
