Geneva: Angola is attending the 58th ordinary session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 24 to April 4, with a delegation led by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendon§a.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the opening session, held early Monday morning, was attended by more than 100 representatives of UN Member States. The event saw the presence of high-level dignitaries, including Jrg Lauber, President of the Human Rights Council, Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, Ant³nio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Volker Trk, High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, representing the host country.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs will present Angola's perspective in the high-level segment on human rights and other panels on Monday afternoon and Tuesday. Key topics of discussion will include the integration of human rights into the theme of the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as well as the contribution of the judiciary to the promotion of human rights and the issue of the death penalty.
Experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats from the Angolan Permanent Mission in Geneva, who are part of the Angolan delegation, will engage in other meetings for interaction and technical approaches to the extensive agenda, which is scheduled to conclude on April 4.
The UN Human Rights Council (HRC), established in 2006, is a subsidiary body of the United Nations. It reports to all UN member states and consists of a group of 47 elected countries, chosen according to geographical distribution around the world. They serve three-year terms on the Council, with each country eligible for two consecutive terms. The Council's primary function is to judge cases of conduct that violate fundamental rights in any territory worldwide, operating on the premises of international law as established by the United Nations.
