Luanda: Eight people have succumbed to cholera in the past 24 hours across various provinces in Angola, bringing the total death toll to 513 since the outbreak began in January. The recent fatalities were reported in Benguela with four deaths, Malanje with two, and one each in Luanda and Cuanza-Norte.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Ministry of Health’s daily bulletin reported 284 new cholera cases in the past day. Benguela recorded the highest number of new infections with 136 cases, followed by Luanda with 45, and Cuanza-Norte with 41. Other affected areas include Malanje with 21 cases, Cuanza-Sul with 11, Bengo with nine, and both Icolo and Bengo, and Namibe with seven cases each. Cabinda reported three cases, while Cubango and Huíla each saw one new case.
During the same period, 298 patients were discharged from hospitals, yet 1,225 individuals remain hospitalized due to cholera. Since the outbreak’s onset, Angola has reported a total of 14,374 cholera cases. Luanda remains the most affected
with 5,292 cases, followed by Bengo with 2,900 and Benguela with 2,415. Other regions with significant case numbers include Cuanza-Norte with 1,565 and Icolo and Bengo with 1,034.
The cumulative death toll highlights Luanda as the hardest-hit region with 191 fatalities. Bengo follows with 112 deaths, while Benguela has reported 78 deaths. Cuanza-Norte has recorded 61, and Icolo and Bengo have 30 deaths. The outbreak has also led to fatalities in Malanje, Cuanza-Sul, Zaire, Cabinda, Namibe, and Huambo.
