Angola Reaffirms Support for Palestine’s Sovereignty at UN Conference

New york: The President of Angola and African Union Chairperson, Joo Lourenço, reaffirmed Angola's unwavering support for the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, during his address at the High-Level International Conference on the Palestine matter. This conference was held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly. According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Lourenço emphasized the significance of the New York Political Declaration, recently adopted by the General Assembly on September 12, which underscores the growing international consensus on resolving the Gaza conflict through the effective implementation of the two-state solution. He highlighted the African Union's position, which includes the principle of East Jerusalem serving as the capital of an independent Palestine, and reiterated Angola's alignment with the continental organization in seeking a definitive resolution to the conflict. President Lourenço recalled Angola's formal recognition of the State of Palestine on December 6, 1988, and expressed satisfaction that numerous United Nations Member States have since followed suit, thereby strengthening the international community's commitment to adhering to UN Security Council resolutions. He stressed that the same international community which established the State of Israel in 1948 is now taking a significant step toward creating the State of Palestine with an equal sense of justice. He further noted that recognizing Palestine marks a substantial advance towards fostering peace, stability, and justice in the Middle East, and that resolving the conflict will contribute significantly to global security. The Head of State emphasized that this shift in attitude reflects the international community's understanding of the Palestinian people's right to live in an internationally recognized state, as a full UN member, which will maintain good neighborly relations and cooperation with Israel.
