Angola Prioritizes Boost in Domestic Mineral Processing

Luanda: The Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, emphasized on Wednesday that the Angolan government is prioritizing an increase in the domestic processing of minerals extracted within the country. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the local industry and reducing reliance on raw mineral exports.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister highlighted that Angola currently hosts nine cutting factories, the majority of which are situated in the Saurimo Diamond Development Hub in the Lunda-Sul province. These facilities are central to the country’s strategy to add value to its mineral resources before they enter the global market.

Minister Azevedo’s remarks were made at the opening session of the International Mining Conference (AIMC 2025) in Luanda. He noted that a significant change in the governance of the mining sector was initiated in 2020. This shift marked a transition from a model where political, strategic, and coordination functions were distinct from concessionary, regulatory, and mining operator roles.

The newly adopted model aims to establish a robust and stable regulatory environment, while simultaneously reducing the government’s direct involvement in mining activities. This change is designed to facilitate and encourage greater participation from private entities in the sector, thus driving innovation and efficiency within the mining industry.
