Yokohama: The Japanese city of Yokohama is hosting the ninth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), starting this Wednesday, bringing together high-level delegations from Africa and around the world to tackle the continent’s pressing challenges.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Angola is playing a pivotal role in the conference as a co-organizer, representing Africa as the Chair of the African Union (AU). The Angolan President, Joo Louren§o, is in Japan to co-chair the event alongside Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba. The conference aims to strengthen Japan’s partnership with Africa, which is increasingly seen as a future hub for global growth.
TICAD9, a platform for multilateral interaction, focuses on creating solutions for Africa’s challenges. The meeting will revolve around three main themes: society, peace and stability, and the economy. Discussions will highlight public-private partnerships, youth and women empowerment, regional integration, and enhancing connectivity both within Africa and globally.
Japanese authorities emphasize Africa’s economic development, noting a shift in focus over the last decade from healthcare and infrastructure to sustainable economic growth initiatives. The conference underscores the principles of African ownership and international partnership, aiming to empower African-led development.
Recognizing Africa’s dynamic growth and its projected population increase, Japan seeks to deepen its relationship with the continent and foster innovative solutions. TICAD, since its inception in 1993, has alternated between Japan and African countries, with this being the third event held in Yokohama.
Ambassador Maruyama Norio highlights TICAD’s multilateral nature, involving not just African nations but also global partners such as China, India, and the EU. Unlike bilateral initiatives from other countries, TICAD is jointly organized by the AU Commission, the World Bank, the UN, and the UNDP, reflecting a collaborative approach to Africa’s development.
Japan’s participation in TICAD underscores its commitment to international peace and security, contributing through logistical support in peacekeeping and aiding in Africa’s Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration processes. Japan aims to share its infrastructure expertise with Africa, fostering partnerships that leverage successful Asian experiences for African development.
