Angola Dominates Uganda in African Handball Championship Opener

Kigali: Angolan men's senior handball team delivered an impressive performance by defeating Uganda 37-21 in the opening round of Group B at the African Nations Championship (CAN'2026) in Kigali. The tournament, which will continue until the end of the month, features top teams from across the continent competing for the prestigious title.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the match showcased Angola's dominance, as they are ranked 8th in Africa, against Uganda, a newcomer to this level of competition. The halftime score was 22-10 in favor of Angola, highlighting the team's strength and strategic prowess on the court. Cl¡udio Chicola, the Angolan center back, earned the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his outstanding performance in the game held at the "BK Arena" pavilion.

In other matches within the same group, reigning champion Egypt was scheduled to compete against Gabon, promising another thrilling encounter. With this victory, Angola temporarily leads Group B with two points and is set to face Egypt on Thursday. The team will conclude the group stage on Saturday against Gabon.

Angola's national team is aiming for a top-five finish in the competition, which would secure them a place in the next World Cup scheduled for 2027 in Germany. The team is focused on maintaining their momentum and achieving their goal of qualifying for the global event.
