Angola Competes in African Open Water Swimming Championship

Luanda: The Angolan National Swimming Team is set to compete in the African Open Water Swimming Championship on June 6th and 7th in Mauritius, with aspirations to maintain or surpass their previous third-place finish. This announcement was made by Ana Lima, the president of the Angolan swimming federation. According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan team, which comprises eight athletes including four female swimmers, will participate in the three- and five-kilometer races, as well as the 4x1000m relay in both male and female categories. The team is under the technical guidance of coach Ivan Matos and features swimmers Carlos Fernandes, Oleksander Zukov, Rhanya Santo, Nyriam Morais, Emanuel Chiocola, Lucas Palha, Mariana Lima, and Naya Gonçalves. In a statement to ANGOP, the federation official acknowledged the challenges the team is likely to face in the competition, emphasizing the significance of retaining the bronze medal won by Rhanya Santo in the 5km event at the 2025 African Championships in Ke nya. She highlighted the need for increased dedication from the national athletes, as the championship will feature the continent's top swimmers. The Angolan team will depart for Mauritius on Thursday following a two-week training session at the Alvalade pool in Luanda. Alongside Angola, other participating countries include Algeria, Egypt, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Libya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, Madagascar, and the host nation, Mauritius.
