Angola and UN Human Rights Council Enhance Institutional Cooperation

Geneva: An Angolan delegation addressed issues of common interest and ways to strengthen institutional cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Council, ANGOP has learnt. The discussions focused on aligning Angola’s international human rights obligations with the UN body’s objectives.



According to Angola Press News Agency, the delegation, led by Secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship Ant³nia Cruz Yaba, met with Mohamed Ciss©-Gouro, director of the Human Rights Council and the Treaty Mechanisms Division, on the sidelines of the 59th session of the UN body in Geneva, Switzerland. The session is set to continue until July 11 at the Palais des Nations.



During the meeting, Secretary of State Yaba presented the Implementation Plan for Angola’s National Strategy for human rights and highlighted the nation’s key challenges in this sector. She emphasized Angola’s willingness to enhance collaboration with the United Nations Human Rights Council.



Mohamed Ciss©-Gouro acknowledged Angola’s efforts in promoting human rights and discussed the importance of investments in the Lobito Corridor. He noted the need for increased oversight on companies’ social responsibility concerning human rights programs and instruments.



The meeting aimed to reinforce existing cooperation and establish a permanent dialogue on training and capacity-building for local human rights committees. Discussions also included the potential participation of Ciss©-Gouro and Abigail Noko, the regional representative for Southern Africa, as speakers at the International Business and Human Rights Forum in Angola later this year, although a date for the event has not been set.
