Cape town: Angola's Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, announced that the country had achieved nearly all its objectives at the Mining Indaba 2026, held in Cape Town, South Africa. This international conference is one of the world's largest events dedicated to the mining sector.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister highlighted Angola's progress in negotiations for the exploration of copper, gold, and critical minerals. These advancements were bolstered by meetings with key industry players such as Barrick, which is involved in gold projects, and BHP, a leading copper mining company. These interactions were pivotal in attracting foreign investment for the development of Angola's critical and strategic minerals.
The minister disclosed that agreements on next steps had been reached with both BHP and Barrick, and that discussions were also held with several other international companies. The Angolan delegation prioritized attracting companies interested in exploring minerals like copper and gold, while also promoting existing licenses granted to national companies facing project implementation challenges.
Angola engaged in bilateral talks with government delegations from the United States, Australia, Canada, and France. The discussions with the United States centered on the development of critical minerals. Talks with France focused on mining cooperation and strengthening ties between the Geological Institute of Angola and the French BRGM (Bureau de Recherches G©ologiques et Mini¨res).
Canada, recognized as a world leader in mining, was identified as a potential partner for sharing expertise to support the growth of Angola's small and medium-sized mining companies. Australia, known for its strong tradition in the mining sector, was also seen as a potential partner, with interactions including participation in a forum organized by the Australian embassy. Currently, two Australian companies operate in Angola, focusing on phosphate, lithium, and rare earths.
Minister Azevedo emphasized that, in addition to mineral resources, Angola has invested in strategic infrastructure such as railways, energy, roads, and ports. These developments enhance the country's competitiveness and appeal to investors. He noted that these factors contribute to improving Angola's image as a nation full of opportunities.
The Mining Indaba 2026 took place from February 9 to 12 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) under the theme "Stronger Together: Progress Through Partnerships." The event attracted over 10,500 delegates, including investors, mining companies-13 of which were Angolan-and government representatives.
