WINDHOEK — American nationals Marcus Thomas and Kevan Townsend are currently appealing their sentences for the murder of Namibian André Heckmair, with a decision expected from the Windhoek High Court on September 9, 2024. The men were convicted last year, with Thomas receiving a 30-year sentence and Townsend 29 years, for their roles in the 2011 murder in Klein Windhoek.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Judge Christie Liebenberg has yet to uncover the motive behind the murder of Heckmair, who was shot in the head while visiting family in Namibia. The judge noted that the convicted men were not forthcoming with information during the trial. The Americans, who had traveled from the United States, were also found guilty of illegally importing and possessing firearms and ammunition.
During the trial, it was highlighted that the convicts displayed no remorse and seemed unfazed by the impact of their actions. This lack of remorse and the gravity of their crimes, including robbery, significantly influenced their sentencing. The case has drawn attention due to the prolonged period both men spent as trial-awaiting prisoners, totaling 13 years before their sentencing.
